The Cabinet of Dr Caligari
Director: Robert Wiene
Germany, 1919
B&W, silent
This silent classic example of German Expressionist Cinema tells the stylized tale of Dr. Caligari, a fairground showman who hypnotises an innocent villager – turning him into a somnambalist (a sleepwalking ‘zombie’) – and compels him to carry out fiendish murders.
Robert Wiene’s one-of-a-kind thriller features fantastic stylized sets, anti-realistic acting, evocative subjective camerawork and unusual and distinctive costumes and make-up.
The director hired the expressionist designers Hermann Warm, Walter Roehrig and Walter Reimann, all affiliated with the magazine Sturm, to design the innovative painted sets that include distorted perspectives, twisted shapes and sharp angles. The idea being to expand the cinema beyond its usual rendition of ‘picturing reality’.
The film was originally released with shifting green, brown and blue tinting on black and white.
The Donkey’s Tail
The Donkey’s Tail is an experimental, abstract, free noise, improv, garage ensemble using electric guitars, drums and percussion teamed with trombone, triangle, squeaking dog toys and alike.
The group was formed in early 2007 by artist John Nixon as a recording project. To date, 12 studio CDs have been released with Nixon solo or in combination with one or more members of the ensemble.
The ensemble for tonight’s concert is comprised of John Nixon, John Bartley, Ljiljana Green, Danny Lacy, Warren Taylor, Daniel Argyle and David Palliser with Dominico De Clario, Michael Graeve and Jess Pinney as special guests.
